The organisation, based in Isiolo Kenya, works as a catalyst and a model for the conservation of wildlife and its habitat. 
We are looking for an experienced, skilled, self-driven and dedicated Elephant Monitoring Officer with a commitment to undertake all aspects of ecological monitoring and evaluation of elephant on the Wildlife Conservancy and Borana Conservancy Landscape and adjacent areas. 
This includes identifying, monitoring and reporting on human-elephant conflict (HEC) incidents as well as the demographics and spatial ecology of associated family and breeding groups.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Identify, monitor and determine the movements and association patterns of the family groups of elephant on the Lewa – Borana landscape and the Mount Kenya Elephant Corridor;
  • Perform regular monitoring patrols to identify individual elephant and groups, their association and develop an understanding of their socio-spatial ecology;
  • In liaison with the fence supervisor, identify and monitor elephant causing HEC incidents including destruction of fences in the landscape;
  • Take photographic records and associated metadata of elephant causing destruction to the fences and breakage points;
  • Working with Borana Conservancy and other relevant stakeholders, set-up and oversee the collection of HEC incidents, as well as identify the movement patterns of elephant family groups;
  • Update the Elephant Database with individual elephant causing HEC incidents;
  • Update the Elephant Database with family groups utilizing the Lewa – Borana landscape and the immediate neighbouring areas;
  • Undertake post-intervention monitoring of elephants to assess effectiveness of management interventions;
  • Monitor injured elephants in the Conservancy while following their recovery post-treatment;
  • Interpretation and production of timely quarterly reports on elephant family groups as well as those causing HEC incidents. This will include making assessments of and recommendations for the effectiveness of HEC mitigation activities and management interventions.
Job Specifications:
  • A diploma in natural resource management;
  • 1 year experience in wildlife monitoring;
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal English and Swahili.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as report writing skills;
  • Bush craft skills will be an added advantage.
